The holiday season means a lot of different things: shopping for gifts, decorating the house, baking all sorts of treats, volunteering or donating to support those in need, and for many of us, a lot of travel. Travel could mean everything from a few nights at your sister’s house to a few weeks in your hometown, or even another country. If your nearest and dearest live all over the country or the world, chances are you have some major travel on your schedule.
Travel can be a lot of fun, but it can also be stressful, exhausting, draining, and boring — and it can even impact your health! You’re surrounded by other people sneezing and coughing, you’re sitting for long periods, and you’re probably not getting the best sleep. Stay healthy while you’re away from home with simple tips for feeling your best.

Be prepared for anything.
Whether you’re hopping a flight, taking off on a road trip, or spending a few nights at Grandma’s house, it’s never a bad idea to pack a small bag of health essentials, just in case. If you get nauseous or motion sickness, try ginger chews or herbal sprays to settle your stomach. Pack your go-to cold remedies or painkillers, as well as anything children may need. Don’t forget bandages and wipes!

Stay hydrated.
If you’ve got a lot of early AM or late night flights on your holiday travel schedule, it can be tempting to fill up on coffee or wine to get you through the journey. Travel is stressful, after all! Make sure you’re also drinking a lot of water, both pre-, during, and post-flight, because there’s nothing drier than the cabin air. Staying hydrated also supports digestion, which is helpful if you tend to get “stopped up” during travel.

Pack healthy snacks.
Save a little cash and feed your body what it really craves while you’re on the road. While we all have our favorite road trip snacks or travel indulgences, packing some healthy options is a great way to keep it balanced. Apple slices, celery sticks, string cheese, and oranges are easy to travel with and can keep you satiated during your trip without too much sugar, fat, or salt.

Get up and move.
Got a long drive or flight ahead of you? Get some movement in before you depart. If you’re waiting at the airport, take a brisk walk before heading to your gate. If you’re driving and weather permits, take a break to stretch your legs so you’re not stiff and sore when you arrive.

Try and get some sleep.
It’s easier said than done, we know, but getting good sleep is key to staying healthy while traveling. If you tend to have trouble falling or staying asleep in a new environment, bring whatever you can that makes you feel more like home: a sound machine, sleep mask, your favorite pillow. Herbal sleep products can also be helpful, or melatonin if you need it.

Wash your hands!
Being surrounded by other people is a surefire way to catch a cold. Wash your hands frequently, especially at an airport and while on the plane. Wipe your phone down regularly. Wear a mask if you want to. Start taking immune support supplements several weeks before you travel or add another to your routine. And most importantly, if you’re feeling sick, stay home if you can. Cheers to a merry, healthy holiday season!
